2011 mitsubishi outlander review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Stylish crossover suv. introductionthe mitsubishi outlander is a stylish crossover suv that seats five. The v6 is mated to a sharp 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The 2011 outlander xls 2wd gets an epa-estimated 20/26 mpg, a slight improvement over 2010. The 2011 outlander gt s-awc is rated 19/25 mpg. Premium fuel is recommended for the v6.  the outlander gt comes with super all-wheel control, or s-awc, developed for the lancer evolution, which provides super control and traction, as well as secure handling in corners.  stylistically, the outlander has presence. The styling was redesigned for 2010 to look more like the lancer and evolution. No longer lost in the midsize suv crowd.  the cabin features a handsome and functional dashboard and instrument panel. The bolstered seats fit just right, the 60/40 second row tumbles forward to create 72. 6 cubic feet of cargo space. It adds rain-sensing wipers, bi-xenon hid headlamps, aluminum pedals.  options include the navigation package 2,150) with 40 gb navigation system with real time traffic; the rear view camera package 2,000) adds the rearview camera and auxiliary video input jack. S-awc all-wheel drive enhances stability in slippery conditions. walkaroundthe mitsubishi outlander fits into the rest of the lineup with that nose. Others call it a fish face, and yep, there's the grouper. We think it looks good. The inward-leaning angular headlamps complement the outlander's face. In the most popular outlander se model, there's a body-colored stripe through the cavernous black mouth. On the outlander gt it's blacked-out, giving that jet fighter look.  it was the 2004 mitsubishi endeavor suv that started the big edgy fender flares thing. It's hard to tell if the overland tones it down or it's just that we're used to them now. Its wheelwell flares don't look so big, as the edges have been nicely smoothened. Not sure if the chrome side sill extensions could have been worse.  there are character lines above those side sills, more like a long dent in the doors about 8 inches above the rocker panels. The rest of the window panels and the b-pillar and c-pillar are blacked out.  there's lots of glass from the rear, and no roof spoiler, just a nice wedge that holds the brake light. The jeweled clear led taillamps look grayish. There's a twin pipe coming out one side, in the v6 models.  2011 outlander gt models get a gt badge and an s-awc decal on the rear. interiorwe'll get the compact third-row seat out of the way first, it won't take long. It's tiny and flips up out of a hole. Figure two kids no older than 9, and not for long. When mitsubishi says luxury seven-passenger, it's a stretch. We call it a five-seater with emergency seating for two extra little ones.  the five-seat outlander es and outlander se models offer storage space under the cargo floor, in that space that the third-row seat folds into. They also offer nearly 3 inches more legroom in the rear seat, a good 39. 6 inches, thanks to not having that compact third-row seat.  the second row seats three and is split 60/40, which fold and tumble for more cargo space. It takes some muscle to flop them back, especially the 60 side, maybe more muscle than some otherwise above-average kids might have. On the xls and gt, the second-row seats slide 3. 3 inches, and that's useful.  two big cubby holes in the way back, and nice door pockets with bottle holders in the rear. Only one standard seatback pocket (driver side optional), but standard heating/air conditioning ducts in the rear.  in back, there's the usual liftgate but then a 10-inch-tall tailgate that lowers and flattens the entry. It's like a miniature version of a tailgate on a pickup track. It's great for loading groceries because the stretch into the cargo area isn't far. This flap-fold tailgate, as it's called, is strong, it'll support a 440-pound golf bag. Or 10 44-pound watermelons. Or two 220-pound football fans at a tailgate party.  the doors sound light, we won't say tinny, but we will say less solid than many others. Maybe it's because the roof is aluminum, lowering the center of gravity. Headroom and rear visibility are both very good. Between the clean speedometer and tachometer there are some colored digital gauges, and a three-instrument package just forward of the shift lever. The dashboard is broad and bold, stitched synthetic leather, with a center split that swoops with the suggestion of a gullwing. It looks nice. driving impressionthe mitsubishi outlander with the v6 engine is noticeably smooth and steady at high speeds, which it negotiates with little effort. It feels almost long-legged, because the engine loses some of its confidence, and gains some harshness, under hard acceleration up to, say, 60 mph. The outlander gt s-awc is rated 19/25 mpg. Premium fuel is recommended for the v6 but not required. Regular unleaded is the recommended fue.

2011 mitsubishi outlander sport review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. It's built on the existing outlander chassis with the same wheelbase, but it's 14. 6 inches shorter overall. Most of that is lost cargo space plus a few inches to rear seat legroom.  the 2011 outlander sport uses the mitsubishi 2. 0-liter engine that's in the base lancer, and suffers somewhat because of it. Acceleration is okay, but there's little room to relax at the throttle. The excellent and efficient 2. 4-liter engine that's in the outlander and most lancers (as well as the jeep patriot) was left on the shelf, mostly because the 2. 0-liter gets about 2 more miles per gallon. It's a lancer front half with a downsized outlander suv back half. It's a good-looking vehicle, and very clean. The fish face snout takes some getting used to, but that's easy. It rears its snout with particular zeal in the darker colors. Some will never like it, but it is bold and distinctive. Those who like it will call it a shark nose. Others may compare it to a largemouth bass.  it's priced attractively, though options such as all-wheel-drive, super-premium sound system with doors designed around the speakers, and navigation will drive the price up. Leather is not available, but the fabric seats are good, and supportive. The rear 60/40 seat folds flat, and includes a center folding armrest with cupholders and a pass-through to the cargo space behind the rear seats. There's adequate rear seat legroom for a compact crossover, and excellent cargo space when the rear seat is folded flat.  the ride is okay for a compact crossover. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is available on the se. Base transmission on the es is the 5-speed manual, with a 6-step cvt optional, while the cvt is standard in the se.  outlander sport es comes standard with 5-speed manual 18,495) or cvt 19,495). Hill start assist is standard.  outlander sport se 21,695) comes standard with the cvt. The se upgrades with automatic climate control, premium fabric upholstery, 18-inch alloy wheels, wide beam hid headlamps, 140-watt, 6-speaker am/fm/cd/mp3 sound system. Outlander sport se awd 22,995) adds all-wheel drive and heated front seats.  options packages include premium 1800), which features a panoramic sunroof and 710-watt rockford-fosgate nine-speaker audio system with doors built around the speakers. Exterior sport 995) adds a rear spoiler over the liftgate and aluminum fuel door. Interior 265) adds piano black trim. Led 340) adds interior led lighting. Navigation with rear camera 2150) adds a system with 40gb that includes 10gb to store music (3000 songs) and rearview camera.  safety equipment includes seven airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, abs with brake force distribution and brake assist, and hill start assist. With its chassis technology that dissipates energy in a crash, as they all do nowadays, mitsubishi anticipates a 5-star government crash ratings. Optional all-wheel drive enhances stability in slippery conditions. walkaroundaddressing the styling, mitsubishi press materials say the outlander sport adds a dash of spice to an otherwise very humdrum segment. We can smile at the cheek of the statement, but we can't argue with it. It looks like the hotrod mitsubishi evolution, as does the lancer. The front styling is inspired by jet fighter air intakes, according to mitsubishi.  but it's not just about looks. It's not just the front end, but also things under and over the car, for example the muffler and the roof rails, that have been tweaked to improve aerodynamics.  almost all of the exterior is body colored, which enhances the clean design. A thin shiny ring around the black screen grille is about the only chrome. The headlamps are a sleek trapezoid. The rocker panels are discreet, not slapped-on cladding like so many cars with an uncaring design. A character line sweeps back and up from front wheels to taillights, creating a wedge.  the window outline is graceful, with tinted glass and black pillars enhancing the shape, tapered at the back. This shape follows the roofline, which slopes away to the modest spoiler over the rear glass. They're optional on the es, standard on the se.  one nice original feature is the plastic front fenders. So forget about parking-lot fender benders, that's a relief. The fenders still scratch, and who can say yet about matching touch-ups or fading, but we think they must be the non-sheetmetal of the future. They're 6. 5 pounds lighter than sheetmetal, and nowadays carmakers are looking everywhere to save weight to improve fuel economy. interiorif the exterior is distinctive, the interior is about as average as they come, from an aesthetic standpoint. The roof, by the way, has led lighting around it, which we weren't able to view but it might have looked great, framing the mexican stars. And, while we're talking after-dark equipment, mitsubishi says that their super-hid head. AM/FM✔ Climate Control✔ Air Conditioning✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Alloy Wheels
